October 13th

On Friday in our classroom we like to play Math games!  One week we played Yahtzee and last week we played "Sum it Up!" with dice and math tiles.  Yahtzee is an excellent game for the students' logic and addition skills.  As they grow in their math abilities they'll be able to use their multiplication skills to add their scores.  This would be a great addition to your family board game library!

In "Sum It Up" you make a 3X3 grid.  Each player rolls 2 dice and records each die as one digit of a two digit number.  (So, if you roll a 6 and a 2 you would record 62).  Roll again and record that roll underneath.  Then, add your two numbers together.  The player with the highest sum wins!  Challenge your child to play with 3 digit sums…add together 3 numbers…play with subtraction.  This is another good family activity!

In honor of Columbus Day we will do a web quest to learn more about Columbus' journey to the new world.  If you'd like more information, here is the link: Columbus cyberhunt

And remember…GO GIANTS!
